Russian Manicure Explained: What Happens and Who It Suits

The ultra-neat cuticle look all over social media — what it involves and the questions to ask before you book.

The “Russian manicure” is famous for its incredibly clean cuticle line and colour that appears to grow straight out of the nail. The name refers to the technique rather than a product.

What happens during a Russian manicure

  1. Your technician uses an electric file (e-file) with small, specialised bits to gently lift and remove dead skin around the cuticle.
  2. The nail is prepped and shaped precisely.
  3. Gel or builder gel is applied very close to the cuticle for a seamless finish.

Why people love it

  • A polished, “just done” look that lasts as nails grow out.
  • Colour sits closer to the skin, so regrowth is less noticeable.
  • Works beautifully with BIAB for strong, natural-looking nails.

Questions to ask your technician

  • How experienced are you with e-file cuticle work?
  • Can we go gently on my first visit? (Especially if you have sensitive skin.)
  • Which colour or overlay do you recommend for my nails?
