“Should I get BIAB, gel or acrylic?” is the question we hear most at our Croydon salon. All three give you beautiful, glossy nails, but they are built differently and suit different lifestyles. Here is a straightforward comparison to help you choose before your next appointment.
Gel polish (Shellac): colour that lasts
Gel polish is painted onto your natural nail like regular varnish, then cured under an LED lamp so it sets hard instantly. There is no drying time and no smudging on the way home.
- Best for: natural nails that are already in good shape and just need long-lasting colour.
- Wear time: usually 2–3 weeks without chips.
- Length: your own nail length only.
BIAB: strength for natural nails
BIAB stands for “Builder In A Bottle”. It is a thicker builder gel that adds a protective layer over your own nail. Because it is stronger than standard gel, it helps weak or bendy nails grow without snapping.
- Best for: anyone growing out their natural nails or recovering from extensions.
- Wear time: around 3–4 weeks, then an infill rather than a full removal.
- Length: natural length, or a small amount of extra length.
Acrylic: length and shape
Acrylic is a powder and liquid mix that is sculpted over a tip or form to create extensions. It is the go-to choice for dramatic length and shapes like coffin, almond or stiletto.
- Best for: long nails, statement shapes and nail art.
- Wear time: infills roughly every 2–3 weeks as your nails grow.
- Length: as long as you like.
Quick comparison
| Gel | BIAB | Acrylic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adds length | No | A little | Yes |
| Strengthens nails | Slightly | Yes | Yes (as an extension) |
| Typical wear | 2–3 weeks | 3–4 weeks | 2–3 weeks to infill |
Which should you choose?
If you love your natural nails and want colour, choose gel. If your nails peel or break easily, choose BIAB. If you want length or a special shape, choose acrylic or an ombré full set. Still unsure? Tell your technician what you want to achieve when you arrive and we will recommend the best option for your nails.
Whatever you choose, always have it removed professionally. Peeling or picking gel and acrylic takes layers of your natural nail with it.
